Memorial Page to Honor the Memory of Claud H. Crump

Claud H. Crump
IT'S OVER
The family of Claud Crump Sr., of Jasper, Alabama would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all the people who have supported us over the last forty years. We especially thank those who have written letters, signed our petitions, attended parole hearings and otherwise helped us keep Steve McCullars behind bars for the 1981 murder of our beloved grandfather. Steve McCullars was one of four people who devised and committed this murder and the last one in prison.
We found out very quickly that the aftermath of our grandfather’s murder was only the beginning. At the time of his death, his wife, his three daughters and nine grown grandchildren were left in shock. His brothers, sisters and other family members were in mourning as well.
Our journey through the criminal justice system started right away even though we were all dealing with extreme, overwhelming grief and fear. Immediately after, some of us spent many hours together, afraid to be alone, pondering why or who would want to kill our grandfather. The weeks, months and years of investigations, trials, verdicts, sentences, appeals, paroles and parole hearings commenced all around us. His death was all consuming but we stood steadfast. His wife and children are now gone but his grandchildren have remained strong until the end.
We recently learned that we will no longer have to relive the trauma that we have endured over and over every five years whenever murderer Steve McCullars had a parole review. While we do not rejoice in death, we are pleased that he will no longer have parole hearings. It’s over. He has met his maker and final judgement; justice is served!
Again, thank you to everyone who has given your time, kindness, concern, prayers and support over the years and a special “thank you” to the Walker County DA’s office for support during parole hearings. We are forever grateful. Our family can have peace now and finally we can say “Rest in Peace” to our beloved grandfather. Wonderful memories of him will hold us; we will forever love and miss him.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING JUSTICE AND THE CLAUD H. CRUMP FAMILY!

On April 7, 1981, after casing the Crump family home for months, Steve McCullars and his accomplices gained access to Mr. Claud Crump’s home in Jasper Alabama by faking car trouble and requesting help under false pretenses and deception. After getting in the door and while holding Mr. Crump at gunpoint, Steve McCullars and his accomplices (a woman and a 16 year old girl) bound Mr. Crump with duct tape across and around his face and head and bound his hands behind his back. Mr. Crump could not breathe and died from suffocation. Court records indicate that they were aware of his distress and did nothing to help him. They proceeded to rob the Crump home and left, deliberately leaving Mr. Crump for dead. This murderous crime went unnoticed for over three days and he was found dead by one of his own daughters. McCullars and his accomplice's intent was premeditated, intentional and was without mercy.
Steve McCullars and his accomplices took away a beloved family member from the Crump family. His wife, children and grandchildren suffered irreversible damage and still suffer and endure as parole hearings continue to re-occur about every five years. McCullars is able to enjoy living; meeting and talking to his family, writing and communicating with friends and family and even enjoying television and more. He may be in jail but he IS alive.
We, the Crump family, have a grave to visit; nothing more. All we can do is buy flowers and hold onto our cherished memories. We lost many years whereby we could have received guidance and shared our lives with our Dad, our Granddaddy, the man we looked up to, the man who gave his all to his wife, his children and grandchildren. He was proud of his family. Claud didn't even get a chance to see some of his grandchildren or great grandchildren. We lost someone we needed; a wonderful man that we loved. Although we suffer each and every time McCullars comes up for parole, we will never give up our quest to keep this man behind bars. Claud Crump has a voice; our's....his family.
If someone takes a life and is proven guilty, admits to the crime and is given a LIFE sentence, then it should be for LIFE!! Steve McCullars was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Claud H. Crump on February 24th, 1983.
We pray that you will help us keep this murderer in jail and off the streets!! He chose a path of crime and violence and we pray that he stays behind bars so that no one else suffers as has our family.
We pray that the Parole Board will deny the release of Steve McCullars on September 1, 2015.
The Claud Crump Family thanks you for your support!! Please keep us in your prayers.
